Column Chromatography
REActivities Column Chromatography Practice (1/2)
This video demonstrates how to pack a column, how to load your sample, how to collect fractions, and what is happening on the column during a separation. In this practice, the sample chosen is a mixture of three dyes. Using a dye mixture is a great way to visualize a column separation in action. Typically, organic compounds are not visible on the column thus forcing chemists to operate this technique blindly.
REActivities Column Chromatography Experiment (2/2)
This column separation experiment will show you what a typical column separation process looks like for a mixture of two organic molecules. You will notice that you cannot visually watch the separation while on the column given that the compounds are both clear and colorless. You will be given the opportunity at the end of the experiment to assess the data from three different students.
